Definitely, NOT STANNING This

CYBERCRIME FACTS UPDATE

A/N: Okay. I know that this is not an anime blogpost, which makes this random in my blog. But, let's take a quick look on what's goin on around us, in this digital world. Basically, what consists in this blog post is my review from this article "Cybercrimes expected to Rise in 2021" by W.Media editor, Jamille Tran. You can check his article here.

First of all,  I could not agree with him more. Cybercrimes are truly to be expected to rise in 2021 especially that now we're in the pandemic times, we are haulingly shifting to everything digital. From our education (online distance learning), to businesses (online shopping) and to banks (g-cash and the likes), all depends on online communication. Not only that, but this article is not blindly stating opinions, all are supported by facts and statistics.

In my stance, the main contributing factor of this expected rise of cybercrimes in 2021 is cybersecurity. Insufficient protection on our computers, networks, and attacks from any attacks is the cause on why most businesses, banks, and even us, digital citizens experience computer-related frauds.  Cybersecurity can only reduce the risk of being exposed to cybercrimes, but it does not block  everything. Thus, awareness can be very helpful in solving such problems.

Laws like the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines, Cybercrime Act of 2012, and the Data Privacy Act of 2012 can help protect us from any cyberattacks. But then again, these laws are not invisible. Hackers and cybercriminals can still look for loopholes. Even before pandemic where the big transition to the digital world happened, banks have experienced being fraud and lost huge amounts of money.

We are quite familiar about the "I LOVE YOU" computer virus which rampaged the physical and digital world in 2000, created by a Filipino named Onel de Guzman. This virus costed several companies, governments and citizens billions of money in damages.

How does the "I LOVE YOU" virus work?

"It erases or blurs the graphics and data in the computer and gets the contact addresses in the computer directory, and sends the same email to all contacts listed in that directory. Once received and opened in another computer, it replicates all that it did previously"

                                            - Country Report on Cybercrime: The Philippines, Sosa

Through the "I LOVE YOU" computer virus, a person can attack/ disrupt computers and networks worldwide and can cause severe damages.

  1. Cybersecurity is indeed one of the contributing factors in growing number of cybercriminals. As the security improves, criminals also became harder to handle. I also agree with this" laws are not invisible. Hackers and cybercriminals can still look for loopholes". Everything is just a cycle that as the government patches the holes to avoid cybercrimes, cybercriminals then again create holes and breach the system ones again.

Looking forward for more of your random and anime blogs!
