My Take on My Infographics

So here's the story.... 👀
In one of our classes, we were tasked to create an infographic on the relationship between information technology (IT), culture, and society. How such relationship affects us as a student, citizen, and a future educator. We also need to emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of such relationship.
While making the infograhics, everything was going smoothly.... until I realized how narrow minded I am in defining what culture really is.
My Take on Culture

| Celebrating our Culture: A New How-to-Guide (Andrea, 2018) |
I defined culture as a set of values, beliefs, traditions, rituals, and arts of people. Which, as you can see is just one- third of the "Culture Wheel" and so I did more research. As such, aside from the "common" culture that I know, we also have business cultures and school cultures. They are simply known as "Organizational Cultures".
Example of such cultures is the "pakikisama" business culture in the Philippines. Interpersonal relationship among colleagues and customers/ clients is important. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Denmark in the Philippines, Filipinos are indirect. Business matters are best dealt with warm and pleasant face-to-face atmosphere, develop rapport to move business along. The business culture of the Westerners are completely opposite. They are more straightforward and gets to the point of business with the client immediately.
See the difference? Culture covers a larger scope and is the product of the interaction of human society.
Society on Culture
Society is simply a group of individuals living in the same social territory. They are people involved in a large scale interaction and the way these people behave or interact is their culture. I think this is the easiest way to explain the relationship between society and culture.
Information Technology on Society & Culture
The 6 Elements of Great Company Culture (Claire Hastwell, 2020)
Information Technology has tapped and influenced a lot in our culture and society. So much is to be said and this has posed a problem for me in making the infographics. I had to break down all everything that I knew to the most common, important and relatable things. One example of this is the Korean culture domination.
The social media we have today helps us learn about the culture (by culture, I mean all the 9 aspects in the Culture Wheel) of other countries without the need of having to travel to their place. This is the power of Information Technology.
K-Pop domination has caused businesses to adapt.
The K-Pop domination is an example. With the help of IT, K-Pop is accessible worlwide through online. This domination gathered lots of fans and praise from people outside their home country. The influence is so large scale that business cultures are also affected. McDonalds for example released the BTS Meal. Korean food chains have also started to pop out in our country.
Through information technology, information has become more accessible. We are able to watch and read from local news to world news. Citizens become aware on the trajectory of the world. Browse it using the internet, you get the information you want. However, due to the large quantity of information gathered, its quality is forsaken. So to say, the authenticity of such information can be a problem. This is the weakness of information technology.
IT brought convenience to the consumers, due to this convenience, consumers exploit the resources gathered. Plagiarism has become rampant among students. When left unconcerned, it could pose a bigger problem in terms of ethics and professionalism of a person when they go to the workforce.
A/N: What are your thoughts about this? You can share what you have observed about the relationship of information technology, culture and society.

Information technology gave us the opportunity to have new experiences by exploring other cultures and communicate with them in order for us to learn.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree that social media allows us to learn about the cultures of other countries without having to travel to them. I am a really into Korean culture. I was able to learn about their food, drama, and K-pop. I would not be able to learn about their culture if it were not for information technology. Learning about other cultures is not a bad thing, but it is also important to love and preserve our own rich culture.
